Packing and Storage Tips
- Label all boxes on all sides for easy identification from any angle.
- Try to keep boxes uniform in size.
- Completely fill each box with heavier items in first and lighter items on top. Use paper to fill in empty areas to avoid boxes from collapsing.
- Bring in the largest items first, appliances and then furniture.
- Keep mirrors upright, tie them in place or place them between a mattress and box spring. Never flat.
- Position long items such as box springs, mattresses, tabletops and sofas along the sides and up on end.
- Pack books, videos and CDs in smaller boxes to avoid getting too heavy.
- Put heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Plan your storage space. Items that you will use most often should be placed at the front of the unit.
- Leave a center aisle for easy access.
- Use the space in bookshelves and entertainment centers for boxes.
- Odd shaped items may fit along side or on top of other items.
- Sofas and love seats can be stored on end to save floor space. Cushions can be placed on top.
- Tables with removable legs can be “broken down” to save space.
- Remember to leave refrigerator and freezer doors open slightly. The areas inside can be used for extra space.
- To prevent tools from rusting, wipe on a few drops of oil. Store away from such items as furniture to avoid staining.
- Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trashcans.
- Drain all gas and oil from lawnmowers, trimmers, etc.
- Make an inventory of all items being stored and keep it in a safe place at home.
